The pre-test (사전평가) is the placement assessment most people take when joining KIIP. It decides which level you start at, so it is worth understanding before you sit it — not to “beat” it, but to make sure you are placed where you will actually learn best.

What the pre-test is for

The point is placement, not passing or failing. The test measures your current Korean ability so the program can start you at the right level. A higher result places you further along; a beginner result places you at the start. Either way, the goal is to avoid wasting your time on material that is too easy or drowning in material that is too hard.

What it generally covers

Placement assessments for Korean typically sample the same skills the course builds:

• Vocabulary — recognizing common words and their meanings;
• Grammar — choosing the correct particle, ending, or pattern to complete a sentence;
• Reading — understanding short passages, signs, notices, or dialogues;
• Listening — understanding spoken prompts (in the portions that include audio);
• Sometimes a short writing or speaking element depending on the current format.

Common question types

You can expect familiar formats: multiple-choice questions that ask you to pick the word or grammar form that fits a blank, reading-comprehension questions about a short text, and listening questions matched to audio. These are exactly the skills you can rehearse in advance.

A practical 4-week prep plan

You don’t need to cram — you need steady, realistic practice. A simple plan:

• Week 1 — Vocabulary base. Run daily flashcards starting from Level 1 vocabulary. Little and often beats one long session.
• Week 2 — Core grammar. Work through Level 1 and Level 2 grammar, reading each pattern’s examples and the practice dialogues aloud.
• Week 3 — Test yourself. Use the quiz to find weak spots, and revisit the specific lessons you miss.
• Week 4 — Simulate. Mix vocabulary and grammar quizzes, and try the review tests (종합 연습) that cover a whole span of lessons at once, like the real thing.

Test-day tips

• Don’t get stuck — placement tests move fast; answer and move on.
• Read the whole sentence before choosing a grammar form; the ending often depends on context.
• For listening, predict what you expect to hear before the audio plays.
• Remember there is no “failing.” Answer honestly so your placement is accurate — being over-placed only makes classes miserable.

After the pre-test
